The Many Sides to Therapy

Apeirogon, as presented, is a representation of a larger therapy space designed to address mental health in the 21st century. As a neighborhood access point in settings from urban to rural, Apeirogon provides an individual therapy enclosure where one can deeply relax to cope with immediate stress and anxiety, or focus on long term Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to improve symptoms over time. The envisioned space is deployable, and tailored for the environment in which it is called upon to serve.

The model presented provides the experience at the heart of Apeirogon: custom, biofeedback driven treatment centered around a user’s need. Speak to Apeirogon, state whether you are stressed or anxious, and Apeirogon will begin a therapy to address your indicant. The internal surface is customized to support three projectors upon which a myriad of therapies can be displayed. The guided imagery and supporting audio initially lead the user, but then begin to loop in the tracked biological data of heart rate and respiration to evolve the session, a true positive feedback loop. The biological data is monitored without impact to the user via a simple camera with a complex code. Apeirogon is then able to provide quantitative data to the user following a therapy session and enables the user to mark improvement from day-to-day, month-to-month, and year-to-year.

Apeirogon was fabricated using a conical extrusion of the alcove produced by a three-projector array. The developable surface was translated to flat sheets of aluminum, cut and etched, then folded and riveted. The interior surfaces, made of low-density polyethylene, were also cut, folded, and taped. Lastly, the camera, speaker, and projectors were installed and connected to a base computer. Together, Apeirogon as a model was created!
